On paths-based criteria for polynomial time complexity in proof-nets
Girard's Light linear logic (LLL) characterized polynomial time in the
proof-as-program paradigm with a bound on cut elimination. This logic relied on
a stratification principle and a "one-door" principle which were generalized
later respectively in the systems L^4 and L^3a. Each system was brought with
its own complex proof of Ptime soundness.
In this paper we propose a broad sufficient criterion for Ptime soundness for
linear logic subsystems, based on the study of paths inside the proof-nets,
which factorizes proofs of soundness of existing systems and may be used for
future systems. As an additional gain, our bound stands for any reduction
strategy whereas most bounds in the literature only stand for a particular

A feasible algorithm for typing in Elementary Affine Logic
We give a new type inference algorithm for typing lambda-terms in Elementary
Affine Logic (EAL), which is motivated by applications to complexity and
optimal reduction. Following previous references on this topic, the variant of
EAL type system we consider (denoted EAL*) is a variant without sharing and
without polymorphism. Our algorithm improves over the ones already known in
that it offers a better complexity bound: if a simple type derivation for the
term t is given our algorithm performs EAL* type inference in polynomial time.Comment: 20 page
Variable binding, symmetric monoidal closed theories, and bigraphs
This paper investigates the use of symmetric monoidal closed (SMC) structure
for representing syntax with variable binding, in particular for languages with
linear aspects. In our setting, one first specifies an SMC theory T, which may
express binding operations, in a way reminiscent from higher-order abstract
syntax. This theory generates an SMC category S(T) whose morphisms are, in a
sense, terms in the desired syntax. We apply our approach to Jensen and
Milner's (abstract binding) bigraphs, which are linear w.r.t. processes. This

Insecurity for compact surfaces of positive genus
A pair of points in a riemannian manifold is secure if the geodesics
between the points can be blocked by a finite number of point obstacles;
otherwise the pair of points is insecure. A manifold is secure if all pairs of
points in are secure. A manifold is insecure if there exists an insecure
point pair, and totally insecure if all point pairs are insecure.
Compact, flat manifolds are secure. A standing conjecture says that these are
the only secure, compact riemannian manifolds. We prove this for surfaces of
genus greater than zero. We also prove that a closed surface of genus greater
than one with any riemannian metric and a closed surface of genus one with

Structured Operational Semantics for Graph Rewriting
Process calculi and graph transformation systems provide models of reactive
systems with labelled transition semantics. While the semantics for process
calculi is compositional, this is not the case for graph transformation
systems, in general. Hence, the goal of this article is to obtain a
compositional semantics for graph transformation system in analogy to the
structural operational semantics (SOS) for Milner's Calculus of Communicating
Systems (CCS).
The paper introduces an SOS style axiomatization of the standard labelled
transition semantics for graph transformation systems. The first result is its
equivalence with the so-called Borrowed Context technique. Unfortunately, the
axiomatization is not compositional in the expected manner as no rule captures
"internal" communication of sub-systems. The main result states that such a
rule is derivable if the given graph transformation system enjoys a certain
property, which we call "complementarity of actions". Archetypal examples of
such systems are interaction nets. We also discuss problems that arise if

Cost-utility of cognitive behavioral therapy versus U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended drugs and usual care in the treatment of patients with fibromyalgia: an economic evaluation alongside a 6-month randomized controlled trial
Introduction:- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-recommended pharmacologic treatments (RPTs; pregabalin, duloxetine, and milnacipran) are effective treatment options for fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome and are currently recommended by clinical guidelines. We compared the cost-utility from the healthcare and societal perspectives of CBT versus RPT (combination of pregabalinâ+âduloxetine) and usual care (TAU) groups in the treatment of FM. Methods:- The economic evaluation was conducted alongside a 6-month, multicenter, randomized, blinded, parallel group, controlled trial. In total, 168 FM patients from 41 general practices in Zaragoza (Spain) were randomized to CBT (n =â57), RPT (n =â56), or TAU (n =â55). The main outcome measures were Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs, assessed by using the EuroQoL-5D questionnaire) and improvements in health-related quality of life (HRQoL, assessed by using EuroQoL-5D visual analogue scale, EQ-VAS). The costs of healthcare use were estimated from patient self-reports (Client Service Receipt Inventory). Cost-utility was assessed by using the net-benefit approach and cost-effectiveness acceptability curves (CEACs). Results:- On average, the total costs per patient in the CBT group (1,847âŹ) were significantly lower than those in patients receiving RPT (3,664âŹ) or TAU (3,124âŹ). Patients receiving CBT reported a higher quality of life (QALYs and EQ-VAS scores); the differences between groups were significant only for EQ-VAS. From a complete case-analysis approach (base case), the point estimates of the cost-effectiveness ratios resulted in dominance for the CBT group in all of the comparisons performed, by using both QALYs and EQ-VAS as outcomes. These findings were confirmed by bootstrap analyses, net-benefit curves, and CEACs. Two additional sensitivity analyses (intention-to-treat analysis and per-protocol analysis) indicated that the results were robust. The comparison of RPT with TAU yielded no clear preference for either treatment when using QALYs, although RPT was determined to be more cost-effective than TAU when evaluating EQ-VAS. Conclusions:- Because of lower costs, CBT is the most cost-effective treatment for adult FM patients. Implementation in routine medical care would require policymakers to develop more-widespread public access to trained and experienced therapists in group-based forms of CBT. Herschel/HIFI deepens the circumstellar NH3 enigma
Circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of a variety of evolved stars have been found
to contain ammonia (NH3) in amounts that exceed predictions from conventional
chemical models by many orders of magnitude. The observations reported here
were performed in order to better constrain the NH3 abundance in the CSEs of
four, quite diverse, oxygen-rich stars using the NH3 ortho J_K = 1_0 - 0_0
ground-state line. We used the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared
aboard Herschel to observe the NH3 J_K = 1_0 - 0_0 transition near 572.5 GHz,
simultaneously with the ortho-H2O J_Ka,Kc = 1_1,0 -1_0,1 transition, toward VY
CMa, OH 26.5+0.6, IRC+10420, and IK Tau. We conducted non-LTE radiative
transfer modeling with the goal to derive the NH3 abundance in these objects'
CSEs. For the latter two stars, Very Large Array imaging of NH3
radio-wavelength inversion lines were used to provide further constraints,
particularly on the spatial extent of the NH3-emitting regions. Results. We
find remarkably strong NH3 emission in all of our objects with the NH3 line
intensities rivaling those obtained for the ground state H2O line. The NH3
abundances relative to H2 are very high and range from 2 x 10-7 to 3 x 10-6 for
the objects we have studied. Our observations confirm and even deepen the
circumstellar NH3 enigma. While our radiative transfer modeling does not yield
satisfactory fits to the observed line profiles, it leads to abundance
estimates that confirm the very high values found in earlier studies. New ways
to tackle this mystery will include further Herschel observations of more NH3
lines and imaging with the Expanded Very Large Array.Comment: 4+2 page
Density-enhanced gas and dust shells in a new chemical model for IRC+10216
A new chemical model is presented for the carbon-rich circumstellar envelope
of the AGB star IRC+10216. The model includes shells of matter with densities
that are enhanced relative to the surrounding circumstellar medium. The
chemical model uses an updated reaction network including reactions from the
RATE06 database and a more detailed anion chemistry. In particular, new
mechanisms are considered for the formation of CN-, C3N- and C2H-, and for the
reactions of hydrocarbon anions with atomic nitrogen and with the most abundant
cations in the circumstellar envelope. New reactions involving H- are included
which result in the production of significant amounts of C2H- and CN- in the
inner envelope. The calculated radial molecular abundance profiles for the
hydrocarbons C2H, C4H and C6H and the cyanopolyynes HC3N and HC5N show narrow
peaks which are in better agreement with observations than previous models.
Thus, the narrow rings observed in molecular microwave emission surrounding
IRC+10216 are interpreted as arising in regions of the envelope where the gas
and dust densities are greater than the surrounding circumstellar medium. Our
models show that CN- and C2H- may be detectable in IRC+10216 despite the very
low theorised radiative electron attachment rates of their parent neutral
species. We also show that magnesium isocyanide (MgNC) can be formed in the
outer envelope through radiative association involving Mg+ and the cyanopolyyne
